The Street Mediators project, delivered by E2, aims to engage young people in locations where they are likely to congregate, to help them make safer decisions about their future.
Experienced youth workers, known as 'Street Mediators' will patrol areas in Leicester City and the County to talk and direct young people towards positive activities happening in their locality. The workers map activities, including clubs and youth groups as well as potential referral pathways.
They also devise and create materials which help to inform young people of sports, arts and other youth-related projects going on in the area.
The key objectives of the project are:
To direct and refer young people away from the streets towards positive activities
To discuss, engage and challenge young people's attitutes towards carrying a knife
To make safeguarding referrals as well as communicate any criminal intelligence to the police
To provide reassurance for residents and young people affected by knife crime.
