On Friday 26th September 2025, the African Caribbean Centre in Leicester was transformed into a vibrant hub of young voices shaping change and community spirit as around 100 young people from Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) gathered for the third local Hope Hack event - an annual event designed to empower young people to co-create solutions for a fairer society.
Organised and funded by the Violence Reduction Network (VRN), the Hope Hack is part of a national movement led by The Hope Collective, which aims to honour the legacy of Damilola Taylor by giving young people a platform to shape real change in their communities.
This year’s event focused on key issues identified by young people themselves, including:
- Mental and physical health
- Inequalities
- Social media
- Opportunities and services
- Education and employment
Through a series of peer-led workshops, performances, and panel discussions, young people explored these topics and proposed innovative ideas to tackle the challenges they face. The event was more than just a discussion—it was a celebration of youth voice and community strength. Keynote speakers and acts inspired attendees to continue driving change. A key speaker of note was Leicester born Sian Lord, a motivational speaker and model who captivated the audience with her inspirational story. A photobooth and interactive activities added to the inclusive and energetic atmosphere.
Hope Hacks are a vital part of the VRN’s commitment to empowering young people and building protective, cohesive communities. By connecting young people with purposeful opportunities, supported by adults that champion them sparks real change, not just conversations.
Rights and Participation Service Manager, Samantha Merry, said; “It was inspiring to listen to the children and young people who so actively and passionately engaged in discussions around shaping and improving their communities. I am confident that their creative ideas will have a real influence on the decision makers in our City!”
In the weeks ahead, the solutions co-created at the event will be shared with partners and decision makers, turning the ideas and voices of young people into real steps for change.
