Community Leadership Programme

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) and the VRN teamed up in 2020/21 to commission a new training programme for local community leaders within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The principal aim of the Programme is to provide local community leaders with access to a free high-quality course which enables them to develop their leadership style, knowledge and skills and apply this to their work with the purpose of building stronger and safer communities. A second aim is to establish and grow a network of local leaders who will provide peer support and work collaboratively with the OPCC and VRN in our shared determination to make our communities safer. By investing in the expertise and experience of local community leaders who already hold positive relationships with people in their communities, our hope is that the benefits of the Programme will remain part of these communities for years to come.

The Community Leadership Programme is being delivered by Jones Consulting and following a review against global quality measures, has been awarded ILM recognised status. By joining this Programme, participants will have the space and support to develop their unique leadership style and make even more of an impact in their community work.  Whilst this is a practical (not assessed) programme, graduates will receive an ILM digital credential which can be used on CV’s and social media along with a paper certificate issued from ILM.

The Programme has three graduated cohorts of Community Leaders and we look forward to welcoming a fourth during 2024. You can find details of the modules covered during the Community Leadership Programme and the dates and times of sessions further down this page.

Graduates of the Programme continue to meet as the Community Leaders Network (follow them on X) with two members sitting on the Violence Reduction Board. When the next cohort graduate, they will join the CLP alumni thereby growing the network and the VRN and OPCC’s collaborative working with communities.

Community Leadership Programme sessions take place every Thursday evening commencing on 18th April 2024 and concluding on 4th July 2024.  There is no session on May 30th due to half-term. Sessions mainly take place in person at community venues with good transport links, and all travel cost are reimbursed. All participants will be invited to a showcase event on 11th July 2024.

Due to high demand for the programme, applicants are asked about their availability to attend all sessions within the application form.  Please note interviews are informal and conducted via Teams. They will be used to further explore applications and ensure awareness of the course requirements, including pre and post session work. Decisions over places are based on suitability for the course as well as ensuring there is a representation from across the area.

Leadership Modules include:

  1. Leadership and Understanding Yourself

  2. Community Empowerment

  3. Project Development

  4. Operational Management

  5. Communicating, Influencing, and Using Social Media

To ensure the sessions are as interactive and as productive as possible, participants will be expected to complete some pre-reading and post-work in between sessions.  Following completion of the Programme, participants are invited to join the three previous cohorts in the Community Leaders Network.
